Miss Julia Hurlbut of Morristown, New Jersey, leading the sixteen members of the National Womans Party who participated in the picketing demonstration in front of the White House, Washington, District of Columbia, July 14,1917, which led to their arrest. These sixteen women were sent to the workhouse at Occoquan, on July 17, 1917, upon their refusal to pay fines of $25 each, but were pardoned on July 19, 1917.

Complete Caption: In 1913, Houdini began to feature his escape from the Water Torture Cell, also known as the Upside Down or U.S.D. In a dramatic routine that eclipsed the very popular Giant Milk Can escape, Houdini, his ankles secured in stocks, was submerged and locked in place in full view of the audience. One of his posters described the feat in the following terms: "The world famous self-liberator HOUDINI, presenting the greatest performance of his strenuous career, liberating himself after being locked in a WATER TORTURE CELL (Houdini's own invention) whilst standing on his head, his ankles clamped and locked above the center of the Massive Cover. A FEAT WHICH BORDERS ON THE SUPERNATURAL.

Chicago area census figures show a significant gap in the economic security between Blacks and Whites. Oonly 35% of Black families earned $10,000 to $25,000 in 1970 compared to 60% for Whites. Of families earning less than $8,000 some 50% were Black and 21% were White. The 1970 median Black income in Chicago was 65% of White families.
